Legal Requirements

Getting Married

To get married in Australia, you must:

  • Not be married
  • Not be marrying a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother or sister
  • Be at least 18 years old, unless a court has approved a marriage where one person is 16-18 years old
  • Understand what marriage means and freely agree to marry

Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) Form

This form is a legal document that must:

  • Be completed in the presence of an Authorised Marriage Celebrant no more that 18 months before and no less that 1 month prior to your wedding date.

As your celebrant, I am required to sight your birth certificate and passport (for non-Australia residents) and your drivers licence to complete the identity requirements for this form. If either party has been previously married I will also need to sight evidence that the marriage has been terminated, such as a divorce certificate or death certificate.

You can download this form by clicking here.
